Itinerary

Day 1 Tromsø Arrival

On arrival at Tromsø Airport, transfer to your hotel in this university town, with its lively atmosphere and friendly locals. Perhaps visit the Arctic Cathedral to see it's daring architecture, go to Polaria Aquarium (don't miss the Northern Lights & Spitsbergen Arctic Wilderness films) or maybe, take the Mount Storsteinen cable car to enjoy panoramic views of Tromsø and its surroundings. There are also numerous excellent art museums in town or you can sample the local beer at Mack Brewery. The world's northernmost brewery has guided tours taking you through 130 years of brewing history. Overnight at Quality Saga Hotel (or similar).

Day 2 Tromsø: Husky Safari - Sommarøy Island

After breakfast, enjoy an exciting dog-sledding adventure in scenic surroundings. Just a 40min drive from Tromsø, the Husky Farm, is situated in an Arctic valley landscape. You will be greeted by 120 happy Alaskan Huskies, waiting for you to pat them. After a short lesson on how to handle the dogs and sleds, we set off in pairs, one musher (driver) and the other sitting comfortably in the sled. Swap places during the trip, so that you each get to drive your own team along quiet, snowy trails. Warm thermal suits, winter boots and gloves keep you warm during your adventure.

Afternoon drive to Sommarøy Island, where more Arctic landscapes await. 2 nights including dinner at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel (or similar).

Day 3 Sommarøy: Panoramic Walking Tour and Aurora Campfire

Start the day with a short, panoramic walk in Sommarøy. With 300 inhabitants, this is one of the busiest fishing villages in Troms county. Views from the island are very impressive and are to be enjoyed, as your guide tells you  about the history and fishing traditions of the village. Remainder of the morning and afternoon free.

Optional activities include kayaking in the crystal clear waters of Sommarøy Archipelago (2hrs), snowshoe hike with a visit to a unique local café for hot drinks and cake (2hrs), or a Sea Eagle safari by RIB or classic boat to search the islands and cliffs for this majestic bird (1hr). If you prefer to relax, you can have a complimentary sauna at the hotel.

After dinner, time for another included activity - a guided, 2.5hr Aurora Campfire Tour in the area around Sommarøy. It is a great spot for Northern Lights searches as the desolate beaches are free from light pollution and the sound of Arctic waves crashing ashore mean you will have a spectacular evening, epecially if the sky is clear and the Aurora shows herself. After suiting up, we head out to a secluded spot and get the fire going, toast sausages and marshmallows, and have a hot chocolate or coffee. Dinner and overnight at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel (or similar).

Day 4 Sommarøy: Reindeer Safari and Optional Activities - Tromsø: Optional Northern Lights Cruise

In the morning, transfer back to Tromsø for another unforgettable experience. The Sami and their reindeer have been living and working this land for centuries and only recently invited guests to be part of their traditional life. At their Reindeer Camp, approx. 30mins drive from Tromsø, a herd of around 200 reindeer will gather around and eat from your hands. Living wild for most of the year, these creatures are only at the camp for a few months over winter, to protect them from predators and harsh conditions. After a brief explanation about reindeer sledding, you will have a short sled ride. Inside a gamme (Sami hut), warm drinks and a traditional Sami meal will be cooked over the fire and served. Afterwards, you are invited into a lavvo (Sami tent) to sit around the fire and hear stories about Sami culture, life as a reindeer herder. They may even entertain us with a joik (Sami song).

Afternoon free for more optional activities: kayaking, snowshoe hiking or a Sea Eagle safari by RIB or classic boat.

Tonight, your optional Northern Lights Cuisine Cruise* is aboard an elegant, hybrid-electric vessel. During this 3hr journey,  enjoy cruising silently around Tromsø Island, while dining on a 3-course Arctic tapas meal. Overnight at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel (or similar).
