Kirkenes, in the very far north of Norway near the Russian border, is famous for freshly caught North Sea King Crabs and Snowhotel Kirkenes. This overnight stay is an ideal addition to any Classic Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage. The Hurtigruten Classic Voyage North ends with arrival here around 09:00hrs, whilst the Hurtigruten Classic Voyage South starts at 12:30hrs.
Transfer from Kirkenes Airport or Hurtigruten wharf to your hotel. Check in and time at leisure, before mid-afternoon pick-up from your accommodation to join a King Crab Safari by boat. Once the crabs are caught they are freshly cooked, so you can enjoy a fabulous King Crab meal, with coffee or tea. After the safari transfer back to your accommodation. Overnight at Scandic Hotel or similar in Kirkenes or a warm Gamme Cabin at Snowhotel Kirkenes.
Today enjoy a guided coach tour to the Russian border and the iron ore mines in Bjørnevatn. Our first stop is Skafferhullet, the historic crossing point on the border between Norway and Russia, where we visit the border and enjoy views of the Russian community of Boris Gleb on the Russian side. We then continue to the mining town of Bjørnevatn, closed in 1996 and re-opened in 2009 - here we gain an insight into 90 years of mining history. The tour then continues to the Storfjell viewpoint for great views over the fjord. After the tour, transfer to the airport or wharf and end of arrangements.
