Longyearbyen Classic Break

Explore Longyearbyen from your hotel base
Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen © Basecamp Explorer

After mid-May the snow quickly disappears. Small flowers start to appear along the mountainsides and the sounds of bird life replace the quiet of winter. You can hear glaciers calving, and see vast blue fjords filled with floating ice. This is Summer time on Spitsbergen. The midnight sun makes it possible to explore Spitsbergen over long days and even into the night. Explore this astonishing place from your comfortable hotel base. Your tour arrangments include accommodation, transfers and a guided excursion from Longyearbyen.

"The best time of my life up in Svalbard! Wonderful from the first smiling people on the hotel desk to the heartfelt goodbye on our final day. Great accommodation, excursions, value for money, people and everything else. Can't wait to come back again." - Tracy V, Perth 2018

Itinerary

Day 1 Longyearbyen Arrival

On arrival at Longyearbyen airport, shuttle bus transfer to your hotel. Time to explore the town - perhaps visit the Svalbard Museum, the North Pole Expedition Museum and the Svalbard Kirke, or browse the shops for a unique souvenir. Overnight at Basecamp Hotel in Longyearbyen.

Day 2 Longyearbyen: Dog Sledding on Wheels

Morning Dog Sledding on Wheels excursion. Husky dogs in the Summer need just as much love, attention and exercise as in the Winter so in Spitsbergen there is summer dog sledding on wheels, where the dogs pull you along in small wooden wagons. Meet your guide at the hotel and transfer to the dog kennel at Trapper's Station, about 10 minutes from town at the foot of Breinosa Mountain. There you can greet 90 excited Huskies who are all eagerly waiting to take you on a trip. After a safety briefing and instructions you are off, with two people to a wagon so that whilst one is driving the other can enjoy the rich countryside of the arctic in summer. You can expect to see abundant arctic plant life and birds and reindeer in their natural habitat. After the tour help the guide settle the dogs back into the yard, followed by lunch. Return transfer to the hotel and afternoon at leisure.
