Kirkenes, in the very far north of Norway near the Russian border, is an ideal place for fantastic winter fun - search for the Northern Lights on a snowmobile, eat freshly caught North Sea King Crabs, enjoy an exciting dog-sled safari and visit the famous Snowhotel for dinner. As Hurtigruten start and finish their Norwegian Coastal voyages here, this tour will fit perfectly with your voyage.
Day 1 Kirkenes Arrival and Northern Lights King Crab Safari by Snowmobile Adventure
Upon arrival in Kirkenes, transfer to your hotel and time at leisure. (Check-in starts at 14:00hrs but you can store your lugagge if you arrive earlier). Around 17:45hrs pick-up from the hotel for a fantastic guided King Crab & Snowmobile Safari. With 2 persons on each snowmobile, you will travel to the best fishing spot to catch the crabs. Sit by the campfire in a traditional lavvo (Sami tent) and feast on the freshly cooked crabs! En route, several stops are made to search the night skies for the fabled Northern Lights. After this memorable meal, return to your hotel. Overnight at Scandic Hotel or similar.
Day 2 Husky Safari & Snowhotel Visit with Dinner - option to add overnight at Snowhotel
This morning enjoy some free time in Kirkenes. Then this afternoon, pick up from your hotel for your dog-sledding safari. Transfer to the husky farm in the wilderness area of Pasvikdalen; after meeting your team of happy huskies, and a short safety instruction, it's time to start. Relax comfortably in the sled while your musher and the dogs do all the hard work, so you can enjoy the silence of the landscape, while gliding across the snow, with only the small sounds of the dogs to be heard.
After the husky safari, return to your hotel and get ready for the evening's adventure - dinner at the wonderful Snowhotel Kirkenes. Pick up from your hotel and transfer to the Snowhotel. On arrival, enjoy a dinner made from local ingredients, served in the warm restaurant. Transfer back to your hotel or optional overnight stay.
Tonight you can choose to add an optional overnight stay at Snowhotel Kirkenes in a Snow Igloo or in a warm Gamme Cabin - just step outside and look up, to search for the fabled Northern Lights. Being so far away from light pollution, this is a wonderful place to seek this magical sight.
Snow Igloos are wonderful displays of snow architecture and Arctic nature, created each winter from local ice and snow, with ice sculptures, ice carvings and more. In your Snow Igloo you will sleep on a bed carved from ice, snuggled warmly in a thermal sleeping bag and blankets. The Snow Igloos do not have running water, bathrooms or electricity. Showers, saunas and toilets are in a separate warm building nearby. Warm sleeping bags are provided as well as extra clothing and hot water bottles. Your luggage is stored in the luggage room.
Gamme Cabins are private, charming wooden cabins, inspired by the traditional hunting and fishing Gamme huts of the Artic and Sami areas. The cabins are like small jewels and have every comfort including air conditioning, underfloor heating and a snug bathroom with a separate aurora glass wall. Best of all, the cabins have a large panoramic window and lounge chairs covered in sheepskins, so you can gaze out in warmth and comfort, as you look for the Northern Lights. All cabins have private facilities.
